in case anyone wants to cut cheese on the plane, it's covered. my mom has a knife!

so my mom arrived back, by airplane, from baltimore today. we sat. we talked. she showed me some of the stuff she got: a rug for the kitchen, some measuring cups, a cheese knife, some clothes, a book.......... A CHEESE KNIFE? not like a little cheese knife, AN 8 INCH CHEESE KNIFE. does anyone else see this as a problem or strange? maybe not to my friend chuck, because he flew last year with, y'know, nothing a terrorist would use. steel knitting needles, and some medical needles cause he's a diabetic (terrorism is still around right? or has bush got rid of it?). what exactly are they looking for? "they" being the updated "high security" that you have to go through everytime you fly. the same security that makes you empty your pockets and remove your shoes. the same security that uses an x-ray machine to look through ALL of your luggage. the same security that took a studded belt from a friend of mine because it was considered to be "dangerous" and could be used as a weapon. i was amazed. completely. i can't imagine how an 8 inch cheese knife got through security but it did and it makes you think. it makes me think. what are they looking for? a guitar case with a machine gun, maybe? bazookas? nuclear bombs 8 feet in diametre? 4 foot machetes?

hmph, keep looking.

    fashion 101

in case you missed it, this is the new style that's taking over. this visor/full face sunglass is the fresh new style straight out of toronto. you can sport it in a few different ways. you can wear it, as shown, as a over-sized-billed visor OR you can pull the shield down completely covering your face keeping all sun, wind, bugs, water, fingers, etc off and out of your face. if you're saying to yourself "but then you wont be able to see?" that's the great thing about this item. it is not opaque. it is transparent enough for you too see through but dark enough to shield you from the sun. i'm not sure if there is a UV coating on it or not but i'll look into that and get back to you.

genius i tell you. genius. and it looks great too.
    thats all for now.

    Toronto International Film Festival

it's september! you know what that means? the international film festival. definitely worth checking out if you can get tickets. all the films are listed on the site so you can go check out whos doing what and when its playing. beware though, the festival tends to draw a lot of crazies. star struck stalkers lurking around for celebrities to photograph and harass (no offence beth). it does get pretty intense. people sleeping outside of hotels, crowding outside restaurents and spas.. etc. people love their stars. there was a lady on the news earlier this evening who has been sitting outside a hotel for 10 hours trying to shoot the stars as they go by. "all i want to see it morgan freeman. ill wait out here until christmas if i have to."

but yeah, the fesival. if you love films, check it out.
i guess if you love celebrities, check it out.
if you're insane and lust after the cast of the o.c., check it out.

  • haha. trying....

"Sony announced it will offer advanced Walkmans later this year in an attempt to take on Apple's iPod. The company made the announcement just hours after Apple unveiled its new iPod nano."

sony definitely doesn't get it. you cannot battle the iPod with this thing. people are more in love with the lifestyle that apple has created more than the product. yes they fall in love with it once they have it but if you ask any joe schmo on the street what he wanted, a sony mp3 player or an apple iPod...... apple has a lifestyle and image that goes a long with it. thats what people are buying. people want you to know they have an iPod, thats why they wear it outside their pants along with their white earbuds. that's why its up there as being one of the most stolen items on the market. apple does make amazing stuff but i dont think most people realize it. that's why you have people with powerbooks and iPods and don't have the slightest idea command (apple) "tab" does or know what an external hard drive is. know what i'm saying?

    image. image is everything.

Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs : A Low Culture Manifesto

I posted about this book on my old blog but since it doesnt seem to be working these days, i want to repost it because i really really really think this book is amazing.

There's quite a bit of intelligent analysis and thought-provoking insight packed into the pages of Chuck Klosterman's Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, which is a little surprising considering how darn stupid most of Klosterman's subject matter actually is. Klosterman, one of the few members of the so-called "Generation X" to proudly embrace that label and the stereotypical image of disaffected slackers that often accompanies it, takes the reader on a witty and highly entertaining tour through portions of pop culture not usually subjected to analysis and presents his thoughts on Saved by the Bell, Billy Joel, amateur porn, MTV's The Real World, and much more. It would be easy in dealing with such subject matter to simply pile on some undergraduate level deconstruction, make a few jokes, and have yourself a clever little book. But Klosterman goes deeper than that, often employing his own life spent as a member of the lowbrow target demographic to measure the cultural impact of his subjects. While the book never quite lives up to the use of the word "manifesto" in the title (it's really more of a survey mixed with elements of memoir), there is much here to entertain and illuminate, particularly passages on the psychoses and motivations of breakfast cereal mascots, the difference between Celtic fans and Laker fans, and The Empire Strikes Back. Sections on a Guns n' Roses tribute band, The Sims, and soccer feel more like magazine pieces included to fill space than part of a cohesive whole. But when you're talking about a book based on a section of cultural history so reliant on a lack of attention span, even the incongruities feel somehow appropriate. --John Moe
